- In December 2003, the University of Cyprus Library completed the project “Creation of Digital Library for the Oral History Archives of the Cyprus Research Centre”. The project included the cataloguing and the digitisation of 3.021 photographs and 7.046 audio cassettes with interviews recorded during the period 1960-2002. All the material is searchable via ABEKT5, a standard library and information services software, with direct hyperlinks to the corresponding digitised audio files. The aim of the program is the creation of a Digital Library from the archives of the Oral History of CRC (Cyprus Research Centre) i.e.: • Archives of Oral history • Folklore archives • Archives of War Veterans. The program is constituted by three complementary sub-projects: • Sub-project I includes the import of data. That is the cataloguing of 10297 audiocassettes and photos of the above three archives and their management from the special program of management of bibliographic data ABEKT 5. Although the cataloguing is based on AACR2, the classification system used is one created by CRC. All the words that are included in the contents are searchable in the system as key-words. • Sub-project II includes the digitization of all the material of the archives (7046 audiocassettes and 3021 photos) and their connection with the database. The digitization of material was judged as essential for maintenance and safeguarding reasons but also for future processing. Specifications for the Digitization of sound Material Transportation in digital format with on DVD (Digital Video Disk = digital videodisc). The capacity of a digital disk (DVD) is 4,7GB. More analytically, the capacity of a digital disk (CDROM) is about one hour of audio sound (WAV) and between ten to twelve hours, depending on the compaction process and the quality of recording in MP3 format. The capacity of a DVD in MP3 format is calculated in roughly 50 hours, according to the selected algorithm of compaction. The file format was done in MP3 (Initially MPEG -3, Moving Pictures Experts Groups - Compaction and recuperation of information in the form of sound, drawn for the technology of digital disks). The transport was done in MP3 format. The MP3 format has been implemented worldwide as the most valid form of transport of audio files in digital form. MP3 superceeds WAV format regarding the degree of compaction of data and consequently the audio file that is stored in MP3, is easier to handle. 186 12ο ΠΑΝΕΛΛΗΝΙΟ ΣΥΝΕΔΡΙΟ ΑΚΑΔΗΜΑΪΚΩΝ ΒΙΒΛΙΟΘΗΚΩΝ Equipment and Process of Digitization For the digitization of material you use the following equipment 8 tape players Marantz 201 1 digital console of reception focusrite Octopre 2 computers of last technology 1 DVD Writer 2 exterior disks of capacity of 250 Mb each one 1 card of sound with 3 exits ADAT Nuendo Software Wavelab Software. The tape players are connected via RCS multi - cord cable to the console focusrite octopre. The digital console is connected via digital exit ADAT 24- bit / 96 Khz and the fiber optic in the digital door of the audio card Stenberg Nuendo 96/52. The above card is installed in of the two workstations. The sound passing through the card is processed using the program Steinberg Nuendo and is placed in WAV files. The WAV files are then processed through the program Wavelab and are finally placed in MP3 files. In the second workstation the files are transferred in DVD disks (2 copies). • Sub-project III completes the program with the creation of a network infrastructure that will function as an intermediary environment of connection of digital files in such a way that it allows the search and development of the Files by the researcher (WebOpac with links to the files).
