  • This paper deals with the perspectives of automatic classification of library catalogue records. It starts with a short overview of the studies into automatic indexing of such records in OPACs in Germany and Austria, and briefly outlines the methodology presently used in studies of automatic classification. According to the author's research, not one single study into automatic classification of German OPAC records has been made so far. Thus, Larson's seminal 1992 publication on experiments with automatic classification of MARC records using the Library of Congress Classification is outlined in some detail. Also, a number of relevant studies and projects, mainly undertaken in East Asia, are briefly reviewed. The paper concludes rather sceptical about the applicability of automatic classification for German OPACs in the foreseeable future.
