  • This paper addresses some issues about the Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) not much discussed on the library and information science (LIS) field in Latin America. It states some aspects of the implementation of automated LIS services which demand both systems of access control and data protection and a decision for the storage of circulationg data. It discusses some issues where ICTs are linked with reading, which have deep implications on the use and comprehension of the contents of books. At the same time it invites educators and librarians to the reflection of the roles they award to such phenomena. The issues linked to the apropriation of ICTs and the possible consequences for libraries are also discussed in order to bring about a final reflection on the role and function of libraries and librarians on the information society.
