- Information retrieval systems, ever evolving due to technological advances, condition information retrieval models and bring about different lines of research in this field of specialisation. One such line concerns the conceptual/procedural changes in the description of resources for their retrieval. We refer here to metadata and although they apply to the description of network resources they constitute another indexing technique since their aim is to describe an object or resource for the purpose of its retrieval. As a result, they can also be applied to structured documents or objects regardless of their area of application.
