  • The Ask a Librarian service is one of the most successful implementations of librarian skills on the Internet. This article describes the Ask a Librarian service at UK public libraries, which is considered a pioneer of web-based information and reference services. Aiming to present conceptual basis of this type of service, the article offers information on history of electronic information services in general, and then draws a parallel between Ask a Librarian and traditional information and reference service, especially its most prominent part – information interview, which represents a foundation of all electronic library information and reference services. The triangular model shows how experience gained from traditional information interview in libraries can be successfully transferred to electronic surroundings. Finally, the conclusion is that the role of librarian in information retrieval in a deep forest of available information is not of technical nature, as could be expected, but rather the result of years of experience librarians have in dealing with library users and answering their information enquiries. When developing and creating any type of information service, whether in real or virtual library, it is necessary to identify the way in which library users first define and then fulfil their information needs.
