- Is it possible for the Universidad de la República (Uruguay) to accomplish with efficiency, its objetives, without an institutional information policy, that not only could involue the library system? Are there programs and plans organized in a short, medium and large term? Can we talk about the existence of a University information system? The present conception of which the information constitutes a strategic resource for the profit of the organizational goals, is it manifested within the inversions that the University spends in human resources, budgets and technology dedicated to the analysis, treatment, usage and diffusion of the information? Some elements offer to respond to be interrogative, emphasizing the deficiency of data updated of the reality of the university libraries of the Universidad de la República. The necessity of the existence of an institutional information policy in the context of a national information policy is analyzed. It is urgent a periodical diagnosis of the reality of the university libraries for the decision making.
