- A brief exposition is made on the situation of psychiatrist patients in Cuba from the colonial times up to the beginning of the second half of the 19th century when the first actions towards a more or less systematic care of these persons were taken. The paper mentions the first paper published about this discipline in the island, the most ancient Cuban original study on this subject and other related publications that came out between the end of the 18th century and the first half of the 19th century. Finally, there is a brief analysis of the contents of the book entitled “TRATADO DE ALINEACION MENTAL”(Mental alienation treatise), published in 1863 in Havana, which is the first among the most complete works written about this subject at the time of Spanish domination.
