  • In the year 2000 a visit to Holguín City by ORBIS project --a non-profit, humanitarian organization, that works in developing countries to save sight through hands-on training, public health education and improved access to eye care--made possible the appearance of a miniglossary covering the most useful terms used in ophthalmology in both English and Spanish languages to help scientists and interpreters in their interactive communication. Eighteen ophthalmologists on different specialities: retina, glaucoma, cataract, strabism and lacrimal ways were interviewed in order to compile the most frequent terms used in their practice. Translation, in a joint participation of ophthalmologists and interpreters, allowed them to determine the most appropiate meaning for each of the 379 terms which finally made their way into this miniglossary. Although this miniglossary was produced under pressing working circunstances, it is of valuable help for present and future reference as part of the everlasting need for knowledge of useful terms in English by Cuban ophthalmologists.
