  • These observations come from the participation at the Preserving the Record of Science tutorial, held in Paris at the UNESCO main office, organized by ICSTI, CODATA and ICSU, calling over 80 participants from all over the world. The main theme of the meeting has been the necessary encouragement towards scientists to understand the importance of documents archival and to recognize the value of the collection created this way. There has been a discussion on preservation, and on who and what institutions must carry on the preservation responsibility. Different opinions emerged on the selection of data to be preserved: the difference between memory and conservation applied to research data requires further explanations, while is clearly stated that digital archival is an expensive activity and funders should have reasons for the costs.
