- E-prints institutional repositories and the electronic documents created by universities and research institutions are fundamental resources for scholarly communication. In the OAI-PMH architecture, they represent the Data Provider which needs the creation of a Service Provider in order to assure a wide taking part in the initiative of Open Archives. The international community is reflecting upon the kinds of services that are necessary to the improvement of the archives’ content because the number of open archives is still low and their implementation implies high funding and an advanced collaborative environment. Among the major Italian consortia, CILEA and CASPUR, which offer highly technological services to universities and research institutions, have joined for the creation of a new platform of access to Italian open archives. This platform is an assemblage of Service Providers serving the repositories that have already been implemented and that are compatible with the standard protocol. In addition, a supporting activity for the installation and management of new Data Provider is nowadays in process. This activity is addressed to those institutions that want to create an open archive without sustaining local investments of human and technological resources. This project aims at enhancing the impact of researcher’s research outcomes and improving the visibility of the scholarly outputs of a particular institution at the national and international level.
