- In the past three years Italy saw the birth of a new king of web research information tools: portals. This paper tries to follow their creation and development to outline their manin characteristics. The “Network of the networks” seems to have arrived to a critical point that needs a complete reorganization, starting from limited and organized areas: this fact can be observed with commercial portals, with categories ordered directories, with the attempts to create digital libraries as tidy areas in the chaos of the web meant as a virtual library. In each case the winning strategy pass through those professionals, librarians and documentalists, that made information the centre of their activities.
