  • This research is directed at studies of the national libraries of South America on the use of descriptive metadata structure standards and content standards for cataloging and its relation with data interoperability of their collections. Defined as main objective to diagnose the use of standards in the cataloging of information resources and the use of interoperable issues among management systems in use by the national libraries of South America As methodological procedure opted for the qualitative and quantitative approach, the literature search and field, and the online questionnaire as an instrument of data collection. Were identified national libraries in the countries of South America: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela, but not in Guyana, French Guiana and Suriname. As a result, it was found that a large proportion of the national libraries of South America uses the MARC21 Bibliographic like structure standard descriptive metadata, the AACR2 as standard content, the ISO2709 format for exchange of bibliographic records, and the protocol Z39.50 for communication and information retrieval literature. It is hoped this research contribute to a better understanding of the operation and use of technological resources in national libraries, specifically on participation in sharing networks, stimulating this area to develop new studies cataloging and technology.
