  • The objective of this work has been to document and share the experience of pilot implementation of an educational-training initiative at the University of Guadalajara in the use of Wikipedia as: a) educational pedagogical tool, b) environment for open and collaborative learning, and c) platform for the construction of free and collective knowledge. The implementation was determined based on five control and action points: 1) starting from a regional context-thematic, 2) search and selection of topics of relevance and encyclopedic suitability, 3) search and selection of topics that contribute to the gaps in Wikipedia, 4) collaboration with teachers who are aware of the use of Wikipedia, and 5) collaboration with university authorities open to implement the use of Wikipedia in higher education. The implementation was done in two educational programs of the University Center of the South Coast (CUCSur), oriented to the use, conservation and restoration of natural and agricultural resources, and which have a link and a space for action in the Protected Natural Area (ANP) of the Sierra de Manantlán Biosphere Reserve (RBSM). As a result of the pilot implementation, it was possible to identify that the ANP of Mexico, despite its importance as an instrument for the conservation, study, restoration and management of biodiversity, have an outdated and dispersed representation of articles, as well as a lack of structure and hierarchy (categorization). The implementation recognizes the value that Wikipedia provides as a resource to publicize and open knowledge of the biodiversity of the Mexican ANPs.
