  • Purpose – Purpose of this paper is to present the decisions taken by the Greek Academic Libraries during the COVID-19 pandemic, regarding the safety of human resources and library users. Due to the nature of libraries, this study focuses on the management of materials and the measures taken to prevent virus spreading. Methodology/approach – This research on the survival and transmission of SARS-CoV-2 virus through surfaces was studied, including general international research, specific research and recommendations to and from the international library community, and the recommendations to the Greek community. Based on the above, a questionnaire was distributed to the Greek Academic Libraries, in order to investigate the adaptation of libraries regarding the health recommendations and measures taken. Findings – Studying the data obtained from the questionnaire and the announcements of the websites, in relation to the instructions and the results of the scientific medical community, based on research and literature, the response of the Greek academic libraries is ascertained to a remarkable degree. In the main issue, the management of items during the pandemic period, libraries worked with great care and dedication towards safe usage. We conclude that in a landscape completely unknown to all humanity, the Greek academic libraries, despite the limited staff, took the appropriate measures in terms of managing their materials, working in a democratic and cooperative environment. Authenticity/value – This research aims to contribute to the evaluation of the management of materials during the pandemic by the Greek academic libraries for the sake of security by introducing primary data. Finally, the major contribution of Open Access is highlighted in the research results including formulating library community protocols.
