- The latest data on the scarce use of Spanish libraries question the usefulness of this service in the everyday life of citizens. At the same time, a movement within Library Science and Documentation that speaks, for example, of the social, participatory or common good library, seeks to expand the civic space it occupies. This paper focuses on the implications of the latest Spanish research on information users for this purpose. First, the data reveal the scarce participation of professionals in this research. Second, there is an abundance of research focusing on the evaluation of information units, but little research aimed at obtaining data for planning purposes. Third, there is more interest in the user in the work environment than in the information needs of users in their daily lives. Finally, there has been an increase in methodological complexity, but this does not lead to an improvement in the explicit practical implications for the management of information units. All this leads to reflect on the need for researchers and professionals to become more involved in the knowledge of the behaviour, habits and information needs of users if the objective is a library that balances the potential social value perceived by professionals and researchers with the value derived from its use and, therefore, its usefulness for the citizen.
