  • A makerspace is a community-operated, often "not-for-profit" workspace where people with common interests can meet, socialize and collaborate, around computing, machinery, technology, science or art. The maker movement emerged from combining digital tools and open source sharing to create physical and digital objects. The first manifestations of this initiative were in the open membership hackerspaces that became popular throughout Germany in the 1990s in the orbit of the Chaos Computer Club in Berlin (1981). There are many positive reasons for providing a makerspace in a library, ranging from providing access to a wide variety of tools and technology; facilitating group interaction, knowledge and resource sharing; providing an open environment for the expression of creativity and innovation; prototyping; empowering the community; fostering community collaboration and co-creation; developing critical thinking and decision-making skills; fostering a culture of lifelong learning; and fostering intergenerational relationships and social connectedness.
