  • This essay takes the recent questions about the concept of knowledge management (KM), whose uncertain origin is located by some authors in the 1990s, while others situate it between the 1960s and 1970s. Since its inception, the KM, emerged from the business context as a ruling notion of organizational management, has gone through numerous and varied drawbacks. However, it becomes developed in various non-profit organizations, such as libraries, information and documentation centers, archives and other documentary units. Its use fulness and topicality are periodically reviewed from the bibliography of different contexts, including from practice it self. After a review of the contributions made by specialists in the information sciences, it is concluded that, KM associated with organizational learning is in current constant expansion and adaptation to the changing contexts in which organizations are inserted. Furthermore, it is possible to think of it as a generator of new conceptualizations, tools and methodologies in order toimprove and enrichinformation and knowledge environments.
