  • Those who work in culture and who enjoy cultural goods are often confronted with the inequality of gender in symbolic production. Critical responses to this inequality contribute to a social change where gender discrimination, braided with other threads of oppression, such as a class, race, nationality, take its place, become visible and can be approached on a democratic agenda. I will begin by debating some topics raised by feminist literature and continue with an analysis aimed at framing the possibilities of humanization of female reading in the prison context, briefly referring to my research, ethnographically based, in a female prison in Portugal.
