  • Mexican universities statistics show that library science is nowadays as others, a women ́s profession. In classrooms the number of women has grown, however, it is not known how they joined the labour force. Therefore we attempted to analyse the status of academics who hold a first degree in librarianship. We surveyed 21 women academics who are full time or part-timers and teach at least one library course at undergraduate or posgraduate programmes at the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters of the National University of Mexico. We identified their nationality, age, status, awards, teaching performance and position held. Also, difficulties encountered throughout their professional lives. We concluded that surveyed women have performed an important role in the development of the field, however they have also faced social prejudices.
