  • The presentation is an introduction to the basic concepts of preservation metadata. Digital preservation is a set of actions aimed at maintaining the accessibility of digital objects over the long term. It addresses the context of digital preservation, building on UNESCO's guidelines for the preservation of digital heritage (2003). In a digital preservation system, the assignment of metadata to digital objects is one of the first measures to allow access to document management and long-term preservation. It then presents the information model OAIS (Reference Model for an Open Archival Information System). Managing the preservation of documents in electronic form is complicated by the rapid obsolescence of playback equipment and software, which are the greatest obstacles to digital preservation. Preservation metadata are "the information that a repository uses to carry out the digital preservation process." (PREMIS, 2008a). It continues with the digital preservation metadata: PREMIS (PREservation Metadata: Implementation Strategies), detailing the PREMIS data model (Objects, Events, Agents, Rights), describing each component and the relationships between them. It ends with the PREMIS data dictionary and briefly presents the evolution of PREMIS.
