  • Education is a field of change. Moreover, education is open and must be open to educational changes. The recent changes that have transformed the society and simultaneously have shaped a new educational environment are globalization and development of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in conjunction with the demand for learning and education. The demand for education combined with the limitations that occurs (distance, employment, lack of time, etc.) leads to the adoption of flexible educational methods such as distance education. The spread of distance education and its adoption by the universities created new circumstances for academic libraries. Academic libraries traditionally play an important role in education and now have to support the educational procedure developing suitable services to the peculiarities and characteristics of distance education. Distance education also impacts on library services in terms of their provision of learning resources and reference services, creating increasing pressure for electronic services. The paper presents both the basic role of the academic libraries in distance education and the services that are obliged to offer. The new services must be added to the existing ones, must suit the distance learning requirements and must fulfill different user needs.
