- Since 2012, the University Library of the Medical University of Vienna is undergoing certification procedures according to the international standard DIN EN ISO 9001 with the aim to continuously improve its products and services. This international standard demands quality management planning, installing, establishing and refining. Therefore a lot of resources, especially human resources, are required. In annually held in-house and external quality audits, the effectiveness of the quality management system and its compliance with all requirements of the standard are tested. These efforts have positive effects on the developed products and provided services, which are achieved by a higher level of transparency of operational procedures and processes as well as a more efficient identification and elimination of sources of error. Based on seven years of practical experience at the University Library of the Medical University of Vienna, the use of a quality management system according to DIN EN ISO 9001 can be recommended to scientific libraries aiming to achieve continuous improvement.
