- The scientific and academic use that is made of social networks every day is important. The virtual communication, the use of metrics and indicators, different measures of performance, etc. are available in a simple way for researchers and institutions. The article analyzes the presence, in the two most significant academic social networks, ResearchGate and Google Scholar, of the authors of the journals belonging to Library and Information Science area located in the index Scimago Journal Ranking (SJR), of the year 2016. More than 60% of the authors have an active presence in both scientific networks and more than 85% of those who have published more than one article, too. These data confirms the evolution of recent years in terms of dissemination of works and evidence of the paradigm shift that implies the use of these networks in open access to increase the visibility and the impact of the scientist.
