  • The knowledge of an author's library is a very effective tool for internal criticism of their works and their intellectual and spiritual formation. With this purpose we offer here a study of the inventory of books that belonged to Juan de Ávila in his last years of life. The history of these books is closely linked to the College of the Society of Jesus of the town of Montilla (Córdoba), founded by Catalina Fernández de Córdoba, Marquise de Priego, at the request of Juan de Avila himself, who, as is known, kept close relations with the Jesuits. Avila donated to the Jesuit College of Montilla, after his death, the books that were his property or that were part of his library, as indicated in the work "Origen y principio del Colegio de la Compañía de Jesús de Montilla". After the expulsion of the Jesuits in 1767, all the books were sent to the Biblioteca Pública del Palacio Episcopal de Córdoba, now the Biblioteca Diocesana de Córdoba, where they are currently kept.
