- This thesis aims to provide an overview of the present state of cataloging practices in German public libraries. It can be used as a foundation for internal comparison and com-munication between public libraries, as well as support for coming changes and decisions regarding cataloging. By means of an online survey, public libraries from all around Ger-many were questioned about their cataloging procedure. Their views and opinions on the importance of cataloging and the competencies and skills needed in cataloging have also been taken into account. The answers of 187 participating libraries show how diverse the cataloging practices in German public libraries are and how cataloging is influenced by externally available records and the different size ranges of libraries.
