- Objective. The main objective of this research was to highlight the role that Library and Information Science professionals should play in the field of bibliotherapy, based on the history and the theoretical and conceptual foundations of the same. Design/Methodology/Approach. It was a qualitative study, with exploratory - descriptive character, that is inscribed in an interdisciplinary paradigm, starting from the multiple fields of knowledge involved in this specialty. Results/Discussion. Their results were associated with the study of the history and antecedents of bibliotherapy as interdisciplinary field, the role of information professionals in this kind of programs and the appropriate types of information sources. On that regard, it was increasingly reflected on the impact of new information and communication technologies. Conclusions. Bibliotherapy has strong relationships with Library and Information Science, so professionals in these fields could research on this topic, as well as in every phase of the practice. A careful selection of information sources is essential in order to promote positive attitudes and to maximize the benefits of reading. Originality/Value. The value of this study lies essentially in claiming the role of the librarian and information professional in the field of bibliotherapy and, in turn, the relationship of this field with the Library and Information Science field.
