  • Organizations generally develop in changing environments, manufacturing is no exception, and their biggest challenge is competition and stay in the market. In addition, this type of organizations and society in general, are immersed in a context of generation and use of data and information in large quantities and formats. This descriptive research presents the results of a study that has been identified as parts of manufacturing organizations where information is produced. Now, this study presents the objectives: a) recovering and analyzing the investigations relate to the use of information in manufacturing organizations; b) analyzing how the information is used and in effect, how it is transformed into knowledge; c) describe, within manufacturing organizations, who have access to information and knowledge; and, d) goal: to develop a model for the study of information and knowledge in organizations. Results. Studies were identified in information science and administrative discipline since 1959. Conclusions. After identifying the basic functions of the factory and analyze research papers it was observed that: 1) all areas (management, administration, procurement, production and sales) are likely to produce information and knowledge. 2) the entry of information and knowledge in these organizations is internally and externally; 3) both the information and knowledge generate new data, information and knowledge; 4) access to organized and systematic information is not for everyone in the organization, only to the senior management.
