  • The added value of knowledge constitutes a factor of economic growth, a fact confirmed by the emphasis that the business world has been giving to the economy of knowledge for at least twenty years. At the same time, during the last two decades libraries all over the world have been facing the pressure to respond to their complex roles ‒ satisfying their user communities, developing the effectiveness and efficiency of their work, and continuing to fulfill their mission ‒ while at the same time reducing their budgets. Especially in Greece, due to the economic crisis, the growth that the academic libraries had achieved in the last two decades -mainly through research financing projects- was held back. Other libraries (e.g. research centres, etc.) have been limiting their activities, for example subscriptions, a fact that seriously hampers their operation. This paper aims to present the Hellenic Economic Library Network (HELIN) that was created as a result of cooperation between ten libraries ‒ initially ‒ in the field of economics, in response to the difficulties that they have been facing in their efforts to provide good services. This paper will describe in detail the establishment of HELIN and its objectives, demonstrating the importance of economic information for all citizens in everyday life, the significant role of the library in providing access to this information, and the role of partnerships in a modern and challenging information environment. In addition, this paper includes extensive reference to the one-day scientific conference organized by Network members in order to promote HELIN and mainly to approach the users of economic libraries, so that the Network can shape its future actions according to the needs of the user community.
