- Emergence of open source technologies have revolutionized the way in which libraries function. Proprietary software requires licence which demands cost and reduces the freedom in its use and customization. The present study intend to determine the perceptions of proprietary Integrated Library System (ILS) users on adopting Open Source ILS (OSILS). The study identified the major issues which forestall wider adoption of OSILS and puts forward some recommendations to enhance the rate of adoption of OSILS by proprietary software users in India. Online survey method was adopted to gather primary data and the coverage was limited South India. The study found that though majority of the proprietary software users recommend and support the adoption of OSILS, but lack of technical knowledge for installing and maintaining the software discourages the matter. The study opines that the rate of adoption of OSILS can be enhanced by providing extensive training to the professionals, making available expertise and documentation as well as adopting simple installation procedures in the package.
