  • Programs and actions developed in Uruguay aboutreading in recentyears are presented from the public policy's perspective. Anapproach is made to some general concepts of public policies which allow both defining a focus topic and presenting a case study, which includes aspects such as: the role of the state; stakeholders; the degree of articulation of policies; the introduction of information technology and communication; the exercise of citizenship. It presents the prospect of Reading skills, overcoming the traditional "reading as pleasure and recreation" point of view, demonstrating its potential for development and social inclusion. Finally, the role of information professionals in the interference on this issue is highlighted, eitherfrom academia or from the role of activators and sensitizerson the same stands.
