  • Purpose/thesis: The paper discusses trends in the development of information science research field since information science was identified as an independent discipline of science until present. Approach/methods: Using chronologically ordered critical analysis of the literature, the author discusses changing names for the discipline and compares subsequent attempts to redefine tasks and research objectives of information science reflected by these changes. The presentation of the evolution of the discipline concept provides a background for the discussion of the results of analysis of contemporary research trends in information science, based on the sample of 361 papers published in four most important international journals in the field: Journal of American Society for Information Science and Technology, Journal of Information Science, Journal of Documentation (2011–2012)and Annual Review of Information Science and Technology (2007–2011). Results and conclusions: The development of information science is presented from its earliest concept formulated by Paul Otlet to contemporary interpretive research on information behavior and attempts to integrate social and technological perspectives of information science research. Attention is drawn to growing multidisciplinarity of information science and consistent development of two separate research fields – one related to information technology improvement and the other focused on the information use and information behaviour. Despite growing diversity of topics researched by information science, its core issue is to ensure effective transfer of preserved knowledge among people in various communities with most effective methods and tools. The analysis of most recent literature confirms that main research trends remain related to the development of information technologies and studies in information behaviour and information use. The shift towards research on information phenomena in the society and within cultural context described in the literature is not confirmed unequivocally. The analysis of the literature confirms growing interest in the theory and methodology of information science, which may express not only developing methodological maturity of this discipline but also anxiety arising from the dissolution of information science discreteness among other sciences which deal with contemporary information phenomena. Originality/value: The paper organizes knowledge on the current development of information science, supplementing it with the description of most recent trends shaping its research field.
