- This article shows from a bibliographic review, diffe- rent points of view about the importance of archives and documents in the construction of family genealogy. It points other kind of archives and documents, which are crucial in the search of genealogy information. It explains also the definition of the family tree and com- pares it according to the bibliography consulted, which countries and at what time there has been interest in this topic. In the case of Colombia, it will be proposed in a general way, which authors and organizations have direct relationships with has been previously announced and the outstanding works that have been made. Finally, it presents the relevance that Internet has had in the last decades in the search of data, in the trend of want to meet the relatives and built its own family tree. This is linked to other concepts about genealogy and basic tools to the investigation orientation of our past.
