- The dissertation analyses the relationships between Museology and the concept of Virtual,making an approach of the virtual museum. It starts with the idea that, in contemporary times, the perception of virtual is related to actions developed via Internet, or World Wide Web. Experiences considered as virtual museums are thus analyzed, in an approach of the idea of virtual based in the vocabulary of Philosophy – as something non static, complex and in continuous transformation: that is, virtual as a permanent ‘to-be’. Comparing that which Museology nominates virtual museum with other manifestations of the Museum phenomenon, the dissertation puts under quest the Internet as a means of manifestation of the Museum, asking if it would be the unique qualifier of the virtual museum. The approach is complemented with an analysis of two examples of existing museums: the Museum of the Person (Museu da Pessoa, Brazil) – as an electronic virtual museum, webmuseum or cybermuseum, existent only in the internet; and the Temporary Museum of Permanent Change, in Salt Lake City, Utah (USA), as a museum organized out of the internet, but which manifests itself through the Web.
