- Turkey entered the new millenium with 74 state and foundation universities which now rose to 175 universities at total. This raise seriously criticized by public because the preliminary preparations for this raise were not done properly and controlled. The government policy to increase the number of universities with the slogan “a university for each province’’ became effective on this raise. The libraries are one of the most important units in supporting the universities to effectively maintain training and research activities which are the main reasons for existence of these young universities. The subject of this paper is to introduce the library situation of the universities constituted by the government within the new millennium. Within this scope; we conducted a questionnaire to the 51 state universities founded after the year 2000 detailing the information relating to personnel, collection, structure, budget and user aspects. In the beginning of the application; it is ascertained that there was no Departments of Library and Documentation unit actively participating in 5 of this 51 universities. 27 universitiy libraries of this remaining 46 ones, did not respond to the questionnaire. Population discussed and samples obtained showed that state university libraries founded in Turkey over the new millennium have problems in personnel, structure, budget and collection aspects and correspondingly a poor quality of service.
