- In the last 20 years internationalisation, digitalization and internet changed the way knowledge is made accessible. During the 1990s there has been a big crisis because the libraries could not afford journal subscription fees any more; the high prices of the commercial publishing companies were one of the major reasons for this; as a result many university presses where founded and the open access idea spread. With open access research results are distributed faster and cheaper. The guidelines „Empfehlungen für die Herausgabe von Open-Access-Zeitschriften an österreichischen Forschungseinrichtungen“ show how to get published in the 21st century.
