  • Many graduate and undergraduate programs teach the scientific method, but few teach the method for selecting articles for publication and research proposals for funding. Masters and PhDs are called upon to arbitrate decisions on publication and allocation of research funds, but rarely they receive specific training to do so. Why? This shortcoming motivated the creation of Project Par ('peer' in Portuguese) 17 years ago, aimed at student peer review, in which students exercise the roles of author and referee. This paper presents the Project, its implementations of student peer review, and describes results of empirical research. The project aims at contributing contribute to increase public understanding of science, in addition to supporting the training of researchers with the ability to give and receive objective critique.
