  • Knowledge management is an organizational practice widely spread in all kinds of organizations including universities. Studies of such practices are developed from different study frameworks based on some or all knowledge management processes. This research is focused on the knowledge management practices of the research groups of a Colombian university as well as on the features of such groups, taking as holistic framework the knowledge management cycle. For such purpose, the grounded theory is used as a methodological strategy to catch in detail the whole context of such practices. Research group coordinators, from a randomly selected sample, were interviewed for collecting data. The main finding from this study is the need to develop in the different research groups the following knowledge management cycle's stages: identification, storage and use. It is then required, among other aspects, to qualify and provide consulting to researchers in the planning of knowledge management actions within their research and management work. Grounded on those results, the main recommendation is going deeper in the study of the knowledge management cycle's stages considering the dynamics and features of the research groups in order to strengthen their generation and knowledge transfer skills.
