- In the last years – since 2003 – many Austrian university archives were assigned to their respective university libraries. At the same time the „Verband Österreichischer Archivarinnen und Archivare (Association of Austrian Archivists, VÖA)“ founded a specialized group called „Archive an Universitäten und wissenschaftlichen Einrichtungen“ („Archives at universities and scientific institutions“), which is organizing training courses that are focusing on the specific needs of these types of archives. This article lists these university archives and their problems caused by the administrative changes. Especially since the position of the university director at Austrian universities was abolished in 2004, the university rectors obviously not feeling responsible for issuing extensive orders concerning the archival records and registry, massive interferences regarding the records management etc. are the consequence. The question for new roles of university libraries can only be answered by focusing on a respective library. In this case the university archives of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna was chosen as an example.
