  • In this paper we report the methodological relevant aspects observed in two experiments carried out under the Doctoral Program of the Department of Library Science and Documentation at the University of Salamanca (Spain). The first study, entitled "Representation and evolution of the concept Ethnicity in the Universal Decimal Classification", analyzed the behavior of this system in respect of the representation of socio-cultural dynamics of the Twentieth Century, in the light of the concept of the Ethnicity. Its main purpose was to assess to what extent we can consider the CDU an impartial and reliable system at the representation and retrieval of information. The second study, entitled "Archival Science under the sign of change: archival scenarios (re) designed by the electronic records", analyzed the impacts generated by the electronic records in the theory and practice of Contemporary Archival Science, highlighting their general significance for the archival community now a days. These two mentioned investigations have in common the application of a qualitative paradigm and a qualitative research design. In the first case, it was developed a critical study of the bibliographic classification systems in the light of an evolving concept: Ethnicity. The phenomena were firstly observed and described and secondly it was carried out a conceptual and terminological analysis. In the second case, it was developed an analytical study, which intended to construct theory. The study began by a deeply and extensive scientific literature research, followed by a systematic and grounded analysis of the data collected, supported by grounded theory method, and finished by the development of theoretical explanations, based on empirical evidence. In conclusion, these two investigations adopted a common investigation challenge: methodological innovation.
