- Patent Information allows economic benefits and competitiveness by the innovation and technology transfer that promotes. The published data from reports and indicators shows that university research centers are not using it properly. We defend that the use of patent information can promote innovative new products and processes. We analyze the relations between the knowledge and effective use of patent information by the academic research centers and its contribution to the innovation process, as showed in the number of new products and processes developed, new patents filled and obtained, and the number of new companies developed to exploit those inventions. Based on a questionnaire to the 173 research centers we compare the results with the data published and conclude about the use given to these information sources.
