- The Portuguese National Health Service has undergone various transformations, from management models to changing organizational structures, and focused, with respect to health information, in more targeted measures in the field of information technology and communication. The area of Information Services, traditionally divided into archives and libraries, has been away from issues on which attention has been concentrated. As we believe that Information Services are part of the hospital information system, we developed the analysis of this area in order to understand its structure and operation. This paper aims to publicize the findings of our study of archives and libraries of the hospitals included in the Portuguese National Health Service, with the highlight in the spread of information among various services, many of them without trained professionals. Many of the existing services do not have essential management tools and do not apply best practices of organizing information based on standardized instruments. Based on the conclusions of this study, we present a model of (re) organization of information services in the hospitals, taking as theoretical-epistemological reference the informational, scientific and postcustodial paradigm, which conveys an integrated, systemic and dynamic vision of the information. This work was developed through the application of the quadripolar method as research device, as it suits the requirements of research in information science, the scientific field where this work fits, since it is not limited to the instrumental part and surpasses dichotomy between qualitative and quantitative research.
