- This presentation studies the weeding process in the portuguese Academic Libraries. We start by exactly defining the concept of weeding; then we present a brief approach to its history, which are the primary goals of weeding and how it should be applied. Finally, we demonstrate that weeding, performed through a pre-established weeding policy integrated in a collection development one, is rarely used in this kind of libraries in Portugal, although this reality could, slowly, be changing. This is the conclusion that we extract from a survey directed to the Portuguese Academic Libraries. We also found out other issues related to the gifts policy and the removing of duplicates.
