- The present paper aims to analyze quantitative and qualitative trends of research in Information Science in Portugal supported on 253 dissertations produced between 1999 and 2012, classified in different areas of Information Science research. For this, the author analysis the dissertations, projects and reports stage of the masters in Information Science of four Portuguese higher education institutions: University of Évora, Faculty of Arts (University of Lisboan), Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities (New University of Lisbon) and Faculty of Engineering (University of Oporto). The results obtained in this study corroborate other similar national and international investigations that examine the scientific literature in Information Science, having more adhesion areas related to information management in organizations. Simultaneously, more theoretical issues of Information Science are few in number, assuming the work, in most cases, the case study methodology, predominating a pragmatic and professional vision of the Information Science, that overstates the intervention attitude to research. Finally, the scientific output resulting from master dissertations is representative of the state of development of Information Science in Portugal, witnessing other issues, such as lack of Groups, programs and research projects in Information Science consolidated in different higher education institutions, the recent recognition and consolidation of Information Science, the existence of some difficulties in the definition of Information Science and its subject, as well as a recent experience of different master programs in Information Science.
