- Investigates the custodial, historicist, patrimonial and technicist paradigm (1789-1945), and post-custodial, informational and scientific paradigm (1945) of trans and interdisciplinary Information Science. Guided by the Quadripolar Method. For data collection uses questionnaire surveys and semi-structured interviews, applied to the directors of District Archives / Brazilian and Portuguese States. The results of the study demonstrate the prevalence of the essential features of custodial, patrimonial, historicist and technicist paradigm and highlights the strong patrimonial component of custodial paradigm, mainly from the twentieth century in Portugal; the technical emphasis (record management) in the archives ofSouthern Brazil and the State objectives in relation to information and communication technology impose on government structures, characteristic of the Industrial Age, showing that the paradigm shift in progress, will be slow, made of overlapping and coexistence, but not paradigmatic rupture . Alert to the need of understanding the Archives as Information System and the need for a different kind of mediation, clearly post-custodial.
