- Bibliographic databases are one of the most important tools of every scientist. However, the data collected in these resources allow for a lot more than making thematic queries. The purpose of this article is to identify the potential of Polish databases for doing bibliometric research. The paper reviews some applications of various bibliographic databases in bibliometric and scientometric research, such as identifying leading journals in certain fields of knowledge, investigating the structure and development of particular fields, including a trend analysis and forecasting, as well as the study of the contribution of various countries to world science. The article presents the conditions necessary to create a Polish citation index.
