  • Digital preservation means ensuring access to and usability of digital content in the future. Digital repositories have in view to ease of use of digital content in a daily basis. Digital preservation systems, on the other hand, provide discovery and access options, propose standardized workflows use and risk analysis. This paper discusses the model of digital preservation management in distributed network that has the feature of using at least six institutions where copies of digital documents are stored. The model was assumed by the LOCKSS initiative at Stanford University that supports the creation of collaborative networks distributing collections saved in various institutions. The distributed model makes use of local infrastructure to ensure that at least one of the participating institutions have the latest version of a newspaper, book or thesis that was copied from the original. THE LOCKSS performs four functions of digital information management: a) Collect contents from electronic publications using a web crawler similar to the ones used by the search mechanisms. b) Check periodically for consistency informational content is stored. c) Give Internet pages where preserved documents can be found. d) Makes available an interface that allows the administrator to select new content to be preserved, safeguarded, monitored content and control access. In countries like those in Latin America, a model like this is can make possible that free access documents will be always available and to have the support of local specialists. The technological and financial regional cooperation would facilitate the adoption of the model. It will be presented the Brazilian experience, who in this year, with the creation of the Digital Preservation Services (Cariniana) by IBICT adopted LOCKSS Alliance digital preservation system to preserve national newspapers using OJS platform and books and theses that are stored in DSpace tool. The Red Cariniana covers among other services, the creation of digital memory centers and scanning units, as well as human resources training in digital preservation in Brazil.
