Daftar Isi:
- The purpose of this paper is to present EBIBA, the Hellenic database on Library and Information Science, the development of which is an initiative of the Library of the University of Cyprus. Among the aims of the EBIBA”s creation is the covering of the existing gap in the recording of the research publications that are produced in Greece and Cyprus related to the scientific fields of Archives, Library and Information Science. The objectives of EBIBA include the definition of a development policy, the identification, recording, organization, digitization, emergence and dissemination of related publications openly accessible to all interested users. The methodology of the presentation includes a historical review starting from the recognition of the need and the decision of the creation to the stages that followed, that is the evolution from a bibliographic (reference type) database based on a Library Information System environment (ABEKT) and the UNIMARC format, with a (simple) link to the digital or digitized full text of the stage one, to the operation as a digital collection and the migration to a digital collection management environment of DSPACE platform and Dublin Core format of the stage two. The time and geographical coverage of the content are presented, as well as the types of the publications that are included and the indexing policy that is followed. For the best understanding of the volumes and the gap covered by EBIBA a quantitative comparison of its content is presented with the relevant content of five international databases LISA, LISTA, E-LIS, WOS και SCOPUS. An emphasis is given to the findings that came out from the comparison of the two formats used at the two development stages of EBIBA, the pros and cons of each format, the positive and problematic issues concerning the usage of the two implementation environments, as well as the technical challenges that the working team had to confront as they emerged because of the migration from UNIMARC to DC. These findings could be proven useful lessons learned for preventing problems from future similar migrations. Further research could follow on this issue, for example the grouping and the typology of expected problems from such migrations. Finally a short reference is made to LEKYTHOS, the open access digital repository of the Library of University of Cyprus, in which EBIBA is hosted among other digital collections of the Library, as well as the research and cultural digital content of Cyprus.
