  • The new information technologies have changed the ways of communication and access to information on the web. University libraries have not been alien to these changes and have had to adapt their applications, services and technologies for teaching and research. The concept of ubiquitous library services anytime and anywhere is imposed in the digital age. We present a theoretical overview and through a literature search and review of websites of university libraries on technological trends based on three pillars: a) the development of new ICT-mediated services, b) access to digital collections (open access, institutional repositories, digital libraries) and c) the application of emerging technologies such as mobile web, linked data, cloud services, metasearch, discovery services, digital identifiers, metadata, semantic web, etc.., which are among others, the new challenges of libraries. We conclude that the concept of ubiquitous library services anytime and anywhere is imposed in the digital age. Virtual libraries are no substitute for physical libraries, but expand their horizon. The connections established between the virtual classroom learning platform and library services will be utilized and highly beneficial for remote students.
