- This paper describes the collabulary, a term employed by El País newspaper to describe a new type of semantic document, halfway between thesauri and ontologies. A collabulary is a collaborative, controlled vocabulary, developed by computer engineers, supported by news librarians and used by journalists with this Madrid-based newspaper. The collaborative vocabulary, introduced in February 2012 —at the same time as the investiture of the new editor— arises from the convergence of the thesaurus of the newspaper itself, the IPTC used for the online edition and other indexing languages. With it, journalists not only write but tag their own news articles, thus generating a link between the daily news and articles from the archive that share the same tag. This taxonomy promotes new synergies between journalists and news librarians, representing a step forward in the journalist’s documentary skills, without compromising the news librarians’ missions. In fact, it facilitates the production of certain classic elements —such as the creation of Timelines or Topics— and places Documentation in the very center of journalistic production.
