  • This chapter reviews various initiatives carried out by schools in 2010-2011 to improve reading skills. We establish some of the concerns and interests in the educational community as a result of new curriculums, a focus on skills, the PISA reports and other indicators. Of particular note are: the progressive implementation of school reading plans (PLEC in Catalan), the efforts of the Catalan Ministry of Education, through well-established projects such as El Gust per la Lectura (Enjoyment of Reading) or the Puntedu School Library Programme, and the creation of new initiatives such as L’Impuls de la lectura (Reading Promotion). In addition, we describe research carried out in the university environment and journal publications on the development of reading in the classroom. We also provide information on associations and foundations and even examples of the personal initiatives of some teachers who aim to boost students’ and teachers’ enthusiasm for reading.
